Direct care staff such as nursing assistants, medication aides, and universal service workers are the superheroes of health care. They may work in a variety of settings including nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, home health, hospice, hospitals, group homes for individuals with developmental disabilities, and schools.

Nebraska Health Care Learning Center (NHCLC) hosts nurse aide and medication aide training and testing both at the NHCA Office in Lincoln and at approved sites across the state.

What is the cost for Nebraska Health Care Learning Center’s state written and clinical nurse aide exams?
The cost for the written exam is $50 and the cost for the clinical exam is $50.

How do I know if I am eligible to take Nebraska’s state written and clinical nurse aide exams?
To be eligible for Nebraska’s state written and clinical nurse aide exams, you must:

  1. Be at least 16 years of age (you can register for and complete the course prior to your 16th birthday)
  2. Have successfully completed:
    • A 76-hour nurse aide course; or
    • The Pandemic Nurse Aide to Nurse Aide Transition program and received confirmation of completion from Nebraska Health Care Learning Center; or
    • Have a lapsed Nebraska nurse aide license.


What are the requirements to be placed on Nebraska’s state nurse aide registry?
To be eligible for placement on Nebraska’s state nurse aide registry, you must:

  1. Be at least 16 years of age;
  2. Successfully pass the state written and clinical exams (if unable to pass both exams after three attempts, you will need to repeat the nurse aide course)


What are the requirements to work in a Nebraska licensed health care facility as a nurse aide?

  1. Be at least 16 years of age;
  2. Not have been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude;
  3. Able to speak and understand the English language or a language understood by a substantial portion of the facility residents; and
  4. Be listed as “active” on Nebraska’s state nurse aide registry within 120 days of initial employment as a nurse aide. 


Following the completion of the nurse aide course, is there a specified timeframe in which I must complete Nebraska’s state written and clinical nurse aide exams?  
There is no deadline but it is recommended you take the exams as soon as possible after completing the nurse aide course.

What are acceptable forms of photo identification needed to take Nebraska’s state written and clinical nurse aide exams?

  1. Driver's license or temporary driver's license with your photo,
  2. State ID with your photo, or
  3. Work ID with your photo.


I have not worked as a nurse aide in a while and my registry status has lapsed. How do I reactivate?

  • If you are listed on Nebraska’s state nurse aide registry as “lapsed,” you will need to successfully pass both Nebraska’s state written and clinical nurse aide exams within three attempts or you will need to retake the class.

The cost of the written exam is $50. 

How do I know if I am eligible to take Nebraska’s state written medication aide-40 hour exam?
To be eligible for Nebraska’s state written medication aide 40-hour exam, you must:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age, although you can register for and complete the course prior to your 18th birthday;
  2. Have successfully completed:
    • A 40-hour medication aide course or similar curriculum approved by Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services; or
    • The Pandemic Medication Aide to Medication Aide-40 Hour Transition program and received confirmation of completion from Nebraska Health Care Learning Center; and
  3. Successfully demonstrated the 10 competencies and the basic routes to a licensed practical nurse or registered nurse.


What are the requirements to be placed on the Nebraska state registry as a medication aide 40-hour?
To be eligible for placement on Nebraska’s state registry as a medication aide 40-hour, you must:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age;
  2. Be of good moral character;
  3. Successfully pass Nebraska’s state written medication aide 40-hour exam (if unable to pass the exam after three attempts, will need to repeat the medication aide course); and
  4. Submit the state registry application for a medication aide 40-hour and applicable fee to Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

There is no deadline for completion of the written exam but, if it has been longer than six months since you completed the course, you must successfully redemonstrate the 10 competencies to a licensed practical nurse or registered nurse.

I have a lapsed status on Nebraska’s state registry as a medication aide 40-hour. How do I become active again? 
A nurse, such as one in the employment setting, must verify your 10 competencies. Taking the medication aide 40-hour exam does not meet the lapsed status competency requirements. You also must submit the Reapplication for Registration form and an $18 non-refundable fee.
