Description
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for ensuring the general well-being of residents both in Assisted Living and Independent Living.  The DON is responsible for the management and supervision of the Direct Care staff.  The DON will deliver high quality services in a manner consistent with the mission and values of the Legacy Retirement Communities and complies with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for hiring, developing and managing the Direct Care staff to ensure high quality service to residents in a manner consistent with the philosophy of the facility.
  • Schedule work assignments for staff on a 24-hour basis using the scheduling tool.  Ensure adequate staff is available to provide the necessary care to residents.  May need to coordinate staffing with outside agency personnel if needed.
  • Provide case management services for residents.  This may involve the completion of pre-occupancy evaluation, assessment/reassessment and the negotiated service plan for each resident.
  • Prepare monthly clinic and level charge billings for both Assisted and Independent residents.
  • Monitor the Nursing department budget and investigate variances from month to month.
  • Monitor resident service plans, record information to determine quality of service to residents and directs staff to implement needed change.
  • Facilitate and encourage family involvement with residents.  Investigate and document resident incidents.  Communicate with resident family members as necessary.
  • Communicate with other caregivers/social workers/Medicaid coordinators on the admission, discharge and resident care as required.  This includes Medicaid billing information.
  • Monitor the overall medication administration process to include documentation of medication errors, proper documentation of medication changes, competency checking of Medication Aides, etc.  Ensure compliance with medication management per state regulations.
  • Ensure Direct Care staff is maintaining the required number of in-service (training hours) either through the online training modules or “live” in-service training.
  • Implement and manage the protocols, policies and procedures developed in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Operations.
  • In cooperation with the Executive Director, ensure the facility meets certification and licensing requirements and State and Medicaid rules and regulations are understood and followed.
  • Provide ongoing training to the Direct Care Staff (Charge Nurses & Aides) in order to provide high quality service consistent with assisted living philosophy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Clinical Operations, Executive Director or other Senior Level Managers.
 

Qualifications:

  • NE nursing licensure in good standing required.
  • Must become CPR certified if currently not certified.
  • Experience working with the geriatric population strongly desired.
  • Three to five years of leadership/supervisory experience which includes staffing, budgeting, employee relations, mentoring, etc. preferred.
  • Computer skills highly desired.
  • High degree of interpersonal relations skills and capable of relating to a variety of people and personalities.  Considerable initiative, judgment and leadership skills needed.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills needed.  Self-motivation required.
  • Able to work flexible hours, participate in weekend and holiday hours if necessary.
  • Able to think, act and intervene independently in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Able to lift a maximum of 25 pounds and be able to stand, carry, stoop, walk, bend, crawl, reach, kneel, push, pull and twist using good body mechanics in completion of tasks.

  • May be exposed to body fluids, infection, odors and disruptive behavior of residents.
  • May be exposed to chemicals/cleaning solutions.
