Program Content: This program is designed to prepare the participant to meet the requirements of the Medication Aide Act and to assume the role and responsibilities of a medication aide. The program is intended for the medication aide in an assisted living facility, nursing facility, or intermediate care facility for people with intellectual disabilities. It can be used to train medication aides in other settings.

Program Objectives: At the completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the basic competencies needed to safely provide another person with his or her medications in accordance with the Nebraska Medication Aide Act.
  2. Identify specific drug families, actions, side effects, and use to treat or prevent disease.
  3. Recognize the responsibilities of the medication aide in relation to additional activities such as PRN medications; providing medications by vaginal, rectal, tube, or inhaled routes; and providing insulin by injection. 

College Credit: Nebraska Health Care Learning Center awards 4.0 hours of college credit upon successful completion of this course. See the Nebraska Health Care Learning Center Education Catalog (Published: March 2023) for credit requirements. To receive college credit, a high school or equivalent transcript and a Transcript Request form must be on file with NHCLC within 30 days of completing the course. Email or fax transcripts will not be accepted. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to receive college credit. 

Evaluations: Please provide feedback on the course by completing the evaluation. An evaluation form will be provided to students at the end of the program.

Attendance and Cancellation: Attendance of the first eight hours of class is mandatory, and students must complete at least 50 percent of the course to be eligible for make-up days. An incomplete is given until time and content are made up. Refer to nehca.org for information related to substitutions, cancellations, and refunds.

Training Manual and Workbook: The Medication Aide Training Manual (Fifth Edition), published by Nebraska Health Care Association, is required for those registering for the Medication Aide program. For manuals and fees, see pricing above. Manuals will be distributed to students on the first day of training.

Scholarships: Information and application can be found online.

State Exam: Additional state exam fees apply: $50 written. A student must successfully pass the course to be eligible to register for the state exam. A student must successfully pass the written exam to be placed on the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services registry.
